Grant Winners

2016 SABM-Haemonetics Research Starter Grant Award goes to:

Stacey Valentine, MD, MPH
Assistant Professor of Pediatrics
Univ. of Massachusetts Medical School
Division of Pediatric Critical Care
UMassMemorial Children's Medical Center

The title of the grant is: “Pediatric Critical Care Transfusion and Anemia Expertise Initiative”

Since the vast majority of transfusion trials are done in adult patients, there is a paucity of information to guide transfusion practices in pediatric patients. This proposed study by Dr. Stacey Valentine is designed to accomplish the following objectives. 1) To develop evidence-based and when evidence is lacking, expert based consensus recommendations on RBC transfusion in critically ill children through an organized and structured consensus series comprised of international and multidisciplinary experts. 2) To define the areas needed for future research. 3) To create an implementation initiative to best ensure stable uptake of the consensus recommendations to ultimately improve outcomes and safety for children at risk for, or who require, RBC transfusion.

Dr. Valentine is excited that Haemonetics has partnered with the Society for Advancement of Blood Management (SABM) to make this research grant available for the fourth consecutive year. She believes that this type of clinically relevant research will benefit our patients by increasing safety, improving clinical outcomes, and reducing the cost of care we provide to critically ill pediatric patients. >
