  • I thought the flyers were very colorful, eye-catching and informative!!
  • The PowerPoint was also very well done, but I was unable to use it since the computer would require staff to monitor it.
  • Great idea to promote blood management
  • Thanks for all your hard work. I have been recommending our Organization to everyone!
  • Hospital Administrators, Directors of Lab and Blood Bank were positive about having this week. I believe that it will be a bigger success as we continue to promote this each year.
  • Thank you! It's an uphill battle but every bit of help “helps.”
  • We're proud to be part of the SABM team and our program continues to move forward. Thanks!
  • Wasn't able to get more organizations involved. I contacted the magazine "Advance for Nurses" and told them about the event. Unfortunately, there wasn’t any  money in the budget this year for artwork, printing, etc.
  • I believe this is a great start. I thank you for the tools and ideas to incorporate at our different programs and hospitals.
  • We found that saturating the institution with information on blood management over 2-3 days got the staff talking about blood management amongst their peers. Some units were actually anticipating our arrival and were anxious to hear the information first-hand.
  • I have had many people tell me about their anemia; so this is really encouraging that we are addressing a real concern for people.
  • It was fun to chat with people and give them information.
  • It helped me with convincing the whole hospital medical staff to start a blood conservation program.
  • One of the highlights for me was the vendor support. Also received support from two blood centers; one provided a display and giveaways and one of the medical directors offered to do a grand rounds on "transfusion triggers". Unfortunately, there was not enough time to organize his lecture but we have already booked him for next year. The Laboratory, Blood Bank, Nursing, Nutrition Departments and Administration lent support and participation. I eagerly look forward to next year as it can only get bigger and better.
  • It was a fun week.
  • Great idea to bring awareness of blood management to the hospital and public.
  • I really liked having the questions for a person to ask when they are at their doctor's office to address this area. The public seem to respond well with this. I also liked how the flyer was put together with tips and strategies. It was very concise and filled with lots of good information.
  • In our institution, although for the past 15 years I have been making noise on blood transfusion risks and blood conservation techniques; it is only now that other clinicians and the hospital administration have seen the significance of blood conservation and avoidance. I am a lone advocate.

What did you do?

  • Developed a theme for the week which was "Keep me in Circulation"
  • This featured a friendly little blood drop as our mascot and he recites this mantra on all stickers, posters, magnets and bookmarks.
  • We used the bookmarks for all patient trays so that each day a bookmark talking about blood management came up on the tray of patients and told them to ask their nurse what their hemoglobin is for the day. The bookmarks also gave them the signs and symptoms of anemia along with 3 questions to ask their physician. We also shared the bookmarks with the staff.
  • The magnets that said "every drop makes a difference" were placed in all the nurse servers and on anything metal on all floors like refrigerators, etc.
  • All staff each day got a visit from nurses in blood management and they each got a sticker along with a crossword puzzle that we developed for blood management along with blood management jeopardy board with questions that we would ask on the floors. There were small prizes for correct answers.
  • Had children that dressed as little red blood cells and handed out red M&M’s (that represented red blood cells that were good) and Craisins (that represented bad red blood cells). These came as a snack for everyone with the visits. We answered their questions regarding blood management on every floor for the hospital.
