BMAW Tool Kit
The Society for the Advancement of Blood Management (SABM) invites all individuals, groups, hospitals, blood donor centers, and healthcare organizations to participate in the 4th Annual Blood Management Awareness Week, November 1-5, 2010. This week is dedicated to educating patients and healthcare workers about blood management and blood issues.
Timeline
Below is a timeline to assist you in the planning of your institution's Blood Management Awareness Week.
Timeline Prior to Blood Management Awareness Week
May/June
- Organize a small planning committee to include the Blood Management Director, a representative from nursing, a social worker, plus any others appropriate to be involved
- Request a CME/CEU speaker or speakers
- Schedule a public educational seminar focusing on blood management
- Communicate to hospital administration and marketing employees
- Develop schedule of events, one day or for each day of BMAW (can focus on a different aspect of Blood Management):
Monday - Cell -Salvage day
Tuesday - Anemia Management day
Wednesday - Blood Bank and Lab day
Thursday - Nursing day
Friday - Physician/Surgical Technique dayOther suggestions:
Pharmacology day (invite Novo Nordisk, Centocor Ortho Biotech, Amgen, Watson, etc)
Blood Management Devices day (invite Stryker, Haemonetics, Tissuelink, etc)
Blood substitute day (have articles and latest information available)
July/August
- Contact companies who have a blood management focus to set up demonstrations (i.e., Cell-Salvage, Tissue-link, Novo Nordisk, Amgen, Watson, Ortho Biotech, etc.)
- Discuss, review and order marketing pieces, give-a-ways and handouts with vendors
- Contact other Blood Management/Blood Conservation programs in your area, if they exist, and coordinate a regional approach to BMAW week
- Get posters printed with the hospital's specific information, logos and contact information on them
- Post flyers
- Develop Educational packets for Physicians, nurses, community
- Utilize your marketing department:
- Contact local Media outlets; possibly a Public Service announcement
- Submit your BMAW calendar of events to be printed in the hospital's newsletters
- send a broadcast email to all hospital staff
- send a broadcast email to members of the surrounding communities
- Post an announcement on your hospital's website and any other applicable websites, e.g. NoBlood.org
September/October
- Develop BMAW competency for hospital staff for that week
- Develop a "Lunch and Learn" session
Third Week of October 2009
- All signage, materials, handouts, and competencies should be ready
