History

Founded in 2001, the Society for the Advancement of Blood Management® was started by a group of dedicated volunteers who saw a need for a new way of thinking. The SABM founders realized that blood management ought to be the standard of care, and that blood transfusion should be viewed as the alternative. This group of volunteers has grown steadily over the years to a membership of over 500 individuals from all over the world who are dedicated to blood management as a standard of care.

SABM has developed into a key educational resource for blood management and is a source of knowledge for all types of blood management strategies. The Society promotes education and training to enhance clinical practices in the field through various resources: educational opportunities on our website; our Annual Meeting in September each year; and several yearly Regional Conferences across the United States and Mexico.

Currently, SABM is continuing to develop evidence-based guidelines that aim to limit the patient's exposure to allogenic blood. We are also working on developing standards or "best practices" in blood management.

SABM's focus in everything it is involved in follows our mission: To improve patient outcomes through optimal blood management.
