Kathleen Sazama, MD, JD
President

Presently, Kathleen Sazama, MD, JD, is the Medical Officer at LifeSouth Community Blood Centers in Gainesville, Florida. Prior to her current position, Dr. Kathleen Sazama was the Professor of Laboratory Medicine at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, and was the Vice President of Faculty Academic Affairs for three years until January 1, 2003.

Prior to earning her medical degree from Georgetown University in Washington DC, Dr. Sazama received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska, in Lincoln and Omaha, and a Master of Science degree from the American University in Washington DC. In 1990, Dr. Sazama received her Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the Catholic University of America in Washington DC. After earning her medical degree, she served residencies in anatomic pathology at the Georgetown University Hospital, and in clinical pathology in the Clinical Center at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. She is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, as well as in blood banking/transfusion medicine.

Dr. Sazama is a member of several professional societies, including serving as the immediate Past President of the AABB, past Board member and a Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Pathology, a member of the American Health Lawyers Association and the American Bar Association, as well as being a Fellow of the College of American Pathologists. She has written numerous book chapters, abstracts, and reviews, as well as publishing several of her works in well known journals such as Transplantation, the American Journal of Cardiology, Transfusion, and the American Journal of Clinical Pathology. Dr. Sazama is both nationally and internationally recognized for her expertise in transfusion medicine. She is the 2004 recipient of the James Blundell Award from the British Blood Transfusion Society.
