Mary L. Ghiglione, RNMary Ghiglione, RN, BSN, is the Manager of the Blood Management Department at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, Washington a multi center healthcare system including 4 campuses. Her responsibilities include the Bloodless Program; Pre-surgical Anemia Clinic; Ambulatory Infusion Center; and Blood Utilization, Transfusion Safety, and Tissue. Her objective is to increase support of blood management strategies in the hospital setting through education and enhanced spirit of inquiry. Ms. Ghiglione’s goal is to facilitate education and awareness of blood management including: safe blood transfusion practices; blood utilization; anemia management; and program development.
Ms. Ghiglione obtained her BSN from Seattle Pacific University in 1986 and is expecting to complete her Graduate degrees in Masters of Science in Nursing and Health Care Administration from the University of Phoenix in the fall of 2009. She has lectured nationally and internationally on the topic of Blood and Anemia Management. She currently is a member of the following professional organizations: Society for the Advancement of Blood Management and was the Chair of the Education Committee’s Nursing Work Group from 2007-2008; the American Association of Blood Bankers, and the Sigma Theta Tao Honor Society of Nursing.
She is motivated by the research that indicates blood conservation strategies can offer patients a higher standard of care, improve outcomes, and decrease waste of a costly resource. She believes now is the time for innovation and critical thinking in an effort to improve blood management strategies in the hospital setting. The future of the advancement of blood management is open, and Ms. Ghiglione has the enthusiasm and energy to participate.
