Patient Blood Management Awareness Week

is a yearly event dedicated to educating patients and healthcare workers about patient blood management and blood issues.

6th Annual PBMAW: November 5-9, 2012

We invite all individuals, groups, hospitals, blood donor centers, and healthcare organizations to participate! Click on the links at left to find out how you can get involved.

Below is a timeline to assist you in the planning of your institution's Patient Blood Management Awareness Week.

May/June

  • Organize a small planning committee to include the Blood Management Director, a representative from nursing, a social worker, plus any others appropriate to be involved
  • Request a CME/CEU speaker or speakers
  • Schedule a public educational seminar focusing on blood management Communicate to hospital administration and marketing employees
  • Develop schedule of events, one day or for each day of PBMAW (can focus on a different aspect of Patient Blood Management):
    • Monday - Cell -Salvage day
    • Tuesday - Anemia Management day
    • Wednesday - Blood Bank and Lab day
    • Thursday - Nursing day
    • Friday - Physician/Surgical Technique day

      Other suggestions: Pharmacology day (invite Novo Nordisk, Procrit, Amgen, Watson, etc)
      Blood Management Devices day (invite Stryker, Haemonetics, Tissuelink, etc)
      Blood substitute day (have articles and latest information available)

July/August

  • Contact companies who have a blood management focus to set up demonstrations (i.e., Cell-Salvage, Tissue-link, Novo Nordisk, Amgen, Watson, Ortho Biotech, etc.)
  • Discuss, review and order marketing pieces, give-a-ways and handouts with vendors Contact other Blood Management/Blood Conservation programs in your area, if they exist, and coordinate a regional approach to PBMAW week
  • Get posters printed with the hospital's specific information, logos and contact information on them Post flyers
  • Develop Educational packets for Physicians, nurses, community
  • Utilize your marketing department:
    • Contact local Media outlets; possibly a Public Service announcement
    • Submit your PBMAW calendar of events to be printed in the hospital's newsletters send a broadcast email to all hospital staff send a broadcast email to members of the surrounding communities
    • Post an announcement on your hospital's website and any other applicable websites, e.g. NoBlood.org

September/October

Develop PBMAW competency for hospital staff for that week Develop a "Lunch and Learn" session

Third Week of October

All signage, materials, handouts, and competencies should be ready

Hospital Strategies

  • Promote planned PBMAW activities throughout the week at physician, nursing and executive leadership meetings ("pop-up" presentations)
  • Create a PBMAW screen saver with you hospital marketing/PR department to run on hospital computers before and during PBMAW
  • Highlight the Bloodless/Blood Conservation/Blood Management Program in the October/November hospital newsletter or other hospital media
  • Send an email blast to hospital staff (with leadership's approval) about PBMAW and any planned events
  • Place table displays (table tents) in the cafeteria or other appropriate locations (e.g. nursing units, waiting rooms)
  • Organize a press release with your marketing department to highlight blood management and the unique efforts being made by your hospital Host a "Blood Management Champion" dinner or lunch to recognize key stakeholders in the program (this does not have to be overly formal or expensive)
  • Email hospital leadership an article or reference discussing the growing national interest in blood management and the benefits of having a comprehensive program at the hospital– (e.g. References to the proposed Joint Commission Blood Management Performance Measures, The Wall Street Journal article–"Hospitals Seek to Limit Use of Transfusions" – Oct 29, 2008, etc.)
  • Organize a strategic planning session with a core group (510) of physician, nursing and executive "Blood Management Champions" to discuss opportunities for growth and improvement in 2010

Physician Strategies

  • Develop formal certificates/ awards for clinical champions that have been essential to your program's growth and development
  • Provide educational CME program(s) for the clinical staff utilizing internal or external experts
  • Display blood management posters in the Physician's Lounge

Nursing Strategies

  • Display blood management posters in each nursing break room that shows the importance of appropriate blood use and nursing's role in blood management
  • Develop a blood management and transfusion safety test or quiz for the nursing staff, with prizes for best scores

Community Strategies

  • Organize a community educational program to promote the impact of blood management programs on the community and in improving patient care
  • Provide educational materials in the hospital lobby, cafeteria, or other ideal location on blood management related topics
    • Arrange to have for give away items at the table – pens, pads, etc.
  • Provide hemoglobin/anemia screening for staff and/or community (if approved by hospital leadership) Provide information about anemia and blood management after screening

Press Release

To help get the word out about PBMAW, we have created a press release that you can submit to your local newspaper, publications, blood banks or other companies/organizations.
 

To request PBMAW to be a recognized week in your state,

please use the letter below as an example of what you can submit to your Governor as a proclamation request. This would be a great advertising piece for your institution's event!

If you are successful in getting PBMAW proclaimed within your state, please let us know so that we may share it with others.
